JBA Initiates Community Garden for Earth Day

In honor of Earth Day JBA is initiating a community garden. JBA employees and their families will benefit from budget friendly, nutritious and pesticide free produce. The garden will be hosted at Firm President, Christopher Ball’s house and employees will cultivate the garden 1-2X a week through November. Surplus produce will be distributed to JBA family, friends and those in need. Planting begins April 30th.

A BIG Congratulations to our very own Neill Scheiter for an Award of Excellence in the AIP(American Society of Architectural Illustrators) 25 Student Competition.

Springfield R-XII Hickory Hills Ribbon Cutting

Ryan and I snapped a few amateur photographs during the Hickory Hills Ribbon Cutting Ceremony this past Tuesday. Below are a couple of our favorites. With that said, we're excited for Gail to go through with her fancy camera later this month.

Photo 1 - The primary building materials, masonry, precast and aluminum are all showcased in the main entry. The surrounding environment penetrates the building through the roof and glass storefront, while the masonry block and precast balance the overall experience inside with dark colors. Photo 2 - Direct and diffused natural light illuminate the interior of the library. A combination of high-performance glass and translucent kalwall systems provide privacy and views for building occupants on the interior while simultaneously creating a dynamic juxtaposition of materials on the exterior.

Environmental Works Named SCA's Project of the Year

SCA's Project of the Year Award - recognizing the project with the best cooperation between the owner, designer and contractors - went to Environmental Works Inc.'s headquarters.

The design-build project, employed only local workers and renovated a vacant building, saving time, money and materials, according to SCA officials.

"We used a local builder and all local subcontractors," said Environmental Works Owner Robin Melton. "It was a real investment in the community and ... gave a nice face lift to a (center city) building."

The project, 1455 E. Chestnut Expressway, also was chosen for its environmentally sustainable features, not the least of which was reuse of the building on one of the city's busiest corridors, said Chris Ball of project designer Jack Ball & Associates Architects PC.

"The most sustainable thing you can do is take an older, vacant, somewhat blighted facility like that and turn it into something new and impressive," Ball said. "Derelict buildings are very contagious. It's very dangerous. What we hope is that it's also contagious in the other direction, and that will be a motivator for continued development on corridors like that."

2009 Hell's Angles - MS Bike Tour - $6,400 Raised

The number of people living with multiple sclerosis increases every hour of every day. This astonishing rate is not going to diminish, nor will it stop, until we've found a cure. Research has made some incredible advances recently, but the world can still only offer disease management drugs and therapies to the 400,000 people living with MS in America.

We've formed a team for Bike MS because we know that riding so many miles is nowhere near as difficult as confronting a lifetime with multiple sclerosis.

In addition to supporting novel research projects around the globe, they also provide much needed education, programs, and services to everyone who is affected by MS - including the diagnosed, their friends and families, and the healthcare professionals who work with them.... Read More

JBAPC Receives NSBA Beautification Award for Environmental Works Design

Rather than developing on an undisturbed prairie in south Springfield, Environmental Works owner Robin Melton decided to take a more sustainable route to the relocation of her company headquarters. She chose to purchase a building in North Springfield, utilizing existing public infrastructure and bringing a breath of fresh air to an often overlooked part of town.

Although the purchase of an existing building was an environmentally friendly choice, the extensive amount of work needed to obtain LEED certification was determined economically unfeasible. Sustainability is always a focus in all projects regardless of the pursuit of LEED; thus, the design team maintained several key sustainable features that make the building more environmentally friendly.

High performance, tinted, insulated curtain-wall replaced the original dated look on the front of the building. Windows were cut into the front façade to bring natural daylight into private offices, and we reused the loading dock on the east side of the building as an exterior break room for employees. A new high-efficiency HVAC unit now serves both the offices and the warehouse behind. Reclaimed wood from the existing infill was utilized to make the sliding barn doors in the conference and break rooms.

Hickory Hills K-8 Construction Tours

Ryan Faust, Project Coordinator, will be facilitating two construction tours of the New Hickory Hills K-8 School this Thursday June 25th. Tours will be provided for the USGBC (United State Green Building Council) Heartland Chapter at 3:00 and for the YAF (Young Architect's Forum) at 5:30.

Fedora Social House to add new sidewalk cafe

JBAPC’s cooperative efforts with the City of Springfield have resulted in the removal of the pesky light-post that was inhibiting the development of Fedora’s new sidewalk café. Approximately 275 sq. ft. of sidewalk cafe space is being added to the facade of Fedora Social House. The new sidewalk cafe will comfortably accommodate 20 diners beginning early next month. His item: His bicycle. He’s an avid rider and… hey, it’s green not to drive.

Ryan Faust is a member of a new generation of architects that doesn’t see green building as a new thing— they see it as the thing. The LEED AP-accredited professional has worked on a number of big local projects, most notably the new Springfield R-12 Hickory Hills school, as well as green schools in Rogersville, Clinton and Republic.

Ryan is the go-to sustainability guy at Jack Ball’s Springfield offices, providing input at every step, from drawing board to ribbon-cutting. “I think the best thing is we’re a small firm, so I’m allowed to be exposed to everything… where others get pigeonholed into doing a certain thing.”

Outside work, Ryan is an avid cyclist, helping lead a local bike club, the Pedal Group. He’s also the director of the local Young Architects Forum and rides on Jack Ball’s annual MS 150 team, “Hell’s Angles”.
