"It was a real investment in the community and ... gave a nice face lift to a (center city) building."

The project, 1455 E. Chestnut Expressway, also was chosen for its environmentally sustainable features, not the least of which was reuse of the building on one of the city's busiest corridors, said Chris Ball of project designer Jack Ball & Associates Architects PC.

"The most sustainable thing you can do is take an older, vacant, somewhat blighted facility like that and turn it into something new and impressive," Ball said. "Derelict buildings are very contagious. It's very dangerous. What we hope is that it's also contagious in the other direction, and that will be a motivator for continued development on corridors like that."

Link to full story here

2009 Hell's Angles - MS Bike Tour - $6,400 Raised

The number of people living with multiple sclerosis increases every hour of every day. She chose to purchase a building in North Springfield, utilizing existing public infrastructure and bringing a breath of fresh air to an often overlooked part of town.

Although the purchase of an existing building was an environmentally friendly choice, the extensive amount of work needed to obtain LEED certification was determined economically unfeasible. Sustainability is always a focus in all projects regardless of the pursuit of LEED; thus, the design team maintained several key sustainable features that make the building more environmentally friendly.

High performance, tinted, insulated curtain-wall replaced the original dated look on the front of the building. Windows were cut into the front façade to bring natural daylight into private offices, and we reused the loading dock on the east side of the building as an exterior break room for employees. A new high-efficiency HVAC unit now serves both the offices and the warehouse behind. He’s an avid rider and… hey, it’s green not to drive.

Ryan Faust is a member of a new generation of architects that doesn’t see green building as a new thing— they see it as the thing. The LEED AP-accredited professional has worked on a number of big local projects, most notably the new Springfield R-12 Hickory Hills school, as well as green schools in Rogersville, Clinton and Republic.

Ryan is the go-to sustainability guy at Jack Ball’s Springfield offices, providing input at every step, from drawing board to ribbon-cutting. “I think the best thing is we’re a small firm, so I’m allowed to be exposed to everything… where others get pigeonholed into doing a certain thing.”

Outside work, Ryan is an avid cyclist, helping lead a local bike club, the Pedal Group. He’s also the director of the local Young Architects Forum and rides on Jack Ball’s annual MS 150 team, “Hell’s Angles”.

The last movie he saw: Role Models

Embarrassing song he loves: “I Would Do Anything For Love (But I Won’t Do That),” Meat Loaf

Go-to restaurant: MudHouse

Beverage of choice: Gatorade Rain or Crown and Coke

TV show he won’t miss: Man vs. Food

Pet peeve: People who talk on Bluetooth when they don’t need to

Celebrity crush: Kate Beckinsale

First car: ’92 Honda Accord, burgundy

Thing he misses most from childhood: Traveling

Magazine he can be found reading: Men’s Health or National Geographic Adventure

Best advice received: A guy once said to me, ‘Don’t wish your life away.” Try to enjoy what you’re doing.
http://www.springfieldgo.com/GO-Magazine/May-13-2009/20-Under-30-2009/
